Investing and collecting opportunities abound at Rock Island's fantastic Spring Premiere Auction to be held April 25th, 26th and 27th. At a time when the stock market changes daily, gun collectors are seeing the worth of their investments hold firm. Hard assets seem to be the place to invest your money in this market and the results at Rock Island indicate gun values continue to rise. This April auction has firearms for every level of collecting and Rock Island Auction's sell through rate of over 97% proves that items that come to RIAC are for sale and now is your chance to make a solid investment.

Henry Lever Action Rifle (http://www.rockislandauction.com/view_item.aspx?aid=46&iid=236325)

manufactured in February-March 1865 and factory engraved by Samuel Hoggson. The rifle has the standard brass receiver and butt plate, blued octagon barrel with brass front sight blade and folding adjustable leaf rear sight, loading lever with lever latch and lacquer finished walnut stock. The butt plate is the second pattern with sharply pointed heel.

The rifle has the extra cost sling swivel inlaid in the left side of the stock and sling loop screwed to the left side of the barrel. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "HENRY'S PAT.OCT.16.1860/MANUFACT'D. BY THE NEWHAVEN ARMS.CO. NEWHAVEN.CT" using the slightly larger markings found on late production rifles. The serial number, "8202" is stamped on the top barrel flat between the rear sight and the receiver, on the lower left side of the receiver tang, in the upper tang inlet of the stock and on the inside of the butt plate. The late style, cap-type butt plate screws are correctly not serial numbered. The factory engraving on the rifle is the distinctive work of master engraver Samuel Hodgson. Both sides of the forward portion of the receiver are engraved with large, stylized, floral designs in bordered panels. The right side plate is engraved with flowing scroll-work on a punch-dot background with a scalloped border.

The left side plate features a game scene with a buck flanked by scroll-work on a punch-dot background. Scroll-work flourishes on punch-dot backgrounds are engraved on the sides and top of the receiver, the upper and lower receiver tang and the top of the butt plate heel. Identical Henry rifle engraving is illustrated on page

22 of "THE BOOK OF WINCHESTER ENGRAVING" by R.L. Wilson and on page 47 of "THE WINCHESTER BOOK" by George Madis. Most of the approximately 9000 Henry rifles manufactured by the New Haven Arms Company between April 1862 and May 1865, were standard rifles intended for sale to individual soldiers or purchased by the Ordnance Department. Relatively few factory engraved Henry rifles were manufactured during the Civil War and surviving examples are rare. The condition of this Henry is rated 'Fine'. The engraved brass receiver and butt plate are in exceptional condition. You can read more on condition of this item on our website.
